The 52nd Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES) Annual Conference was held at Osaka University in Osaka, Japan from June 24th to 26th, 2016. Professor Keiichi Ogawa and three of his graduate students (current and former) presented during the conference and were able to obtain useful feedback.

On the first day of the conference, Professor Ogawa, Mr. Phal Chea (doctoral student) and Dr. Akemi Ashida (alumnae and Programme Officer, UNESCO Bangkok) conducted a roundtable to present their study on “School Finance in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar,” which was a joint research by Kobe University and UNESCO Bangkok, with financial support from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). During the roundtable, the team shared key findings of the study on school financing with regard to adequacy of resources for school financing, efficiency of school finance in terms of resource mobilization and management, and how school financing serves equity objectives in the ASEAN countries.

JCES The conference provided an excellent opportunity to Ogawa Zemi students who participated in the conference to connect with other Ogawa zemi alumni and to network with professors from other universities. For instance, Ms. Sun-Kyung Choi, a doctoral student from Ogawa Zemi received valuable career advice from Dr. Sakurai, Associate Professor from Tohoku University, who advised her to build capacities applicable for both international organizations and academia.
